Illegal Immigrants

Ok, to start it off, chances are pretty good that my ancestors did a bunch of “illegal” activities to provide freedom to the the U.S.

I will agree that there is an immigration problem in the U.S. but it is not with the immigrants but with the employers that do not pay the taxes required.  When I got out of college and looking for a temporary job, one of the more interesting jobs paid just above minimum pay for a quasi – skilled job.  I asked about taxes and the owner said that it was up to me what I wanted to do.  That is when I realized that he was probably not the most honest person either (so much for that job). Apache hijacks city’s website

This is one of those ROTFLOL (Rolling on the floor laughing out loud) experiences. Let me set up some definitions before I start:

  • CentOS – This is a Linux distribution (Linux OS wrapped with other stuff for users) mainly for server applications or “enterprise” systems. Like Microsoft Windows or Mac OSX but usually used for behind the scenes stuff like email, web pages, etc.
  • Apache – This is what is called a web server that runs on a computer with an operating system (OS) such as CentOS, Windows, Mac OSX, etc. This is what you connect to when you go to a website and it “serves up” the pages as you click through the site.
  • Service Provider – the company that uses the above softwares and helps clients set up web pages and/or provides the hardware (computers) and internet access needed for the world to access the web pages.

Ok, now for the story is summary: The company that provided the city of Tuttle, OK with the web space for their website had to reinstall the OS (which was CentOS) on the computer that ran their web site. It seems that it was not set up properly so when one went to the city website the page that popped up was a default page written by CentOS to show that the Apache server was set up correctly and the website pages were not set up yet. Top 5 Events

In past 11 years since college graduation, I have had many life changing experiences. However, one of the top five happened this past week. Our fourth child, Adrian Matthew was born on Tuesday morning.

What a gift!

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
Your eyes saw my unformed body.

All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

– Psalms 139:13-16

Deepest Sender

Another way cool bloggin’ tool (for WordPress, Blogger, and LiveJournal).  For those of you using Firefox as your web browser this may be for you.  Deepest Sender is an extension that with a click of a button will open a window for you to post to your blog.  Though I have not tested everything, there are buttons for assorted justification, lists, links, images, indents, etc.

To start this tool once installed, you can find it in the Tools menu.  The initial click will ask for log in information and the hardest part is the website.  For WordPress this would be:

http://www.yoursite.com/wordpressdirectory/xmlrpc.php

or if wordpress is on the root of your site it would be something like:

http://www.yoursite.com/xmlrpc.php

Add username and password, select a few preferences and there you are. Or so it seems.

You can also add an icon in the Firefox tool bar by right clicking the tool bar and Customize… Then find the Deepest Sender icon and drag and drop on to the tool bar where you want it.

Have fun.

MPAA in violation of DMCA

Looks like it illegal that I make a personal copy of my personal, purchased DVDs for my personal use under the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) pushed by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). However, it is ok for the MPAA to make copies even if they promised in writing not to make copies of that specific documentary?

Quoted from the MPAA web site:

“Manufacturing, selling, distributing or making copies of motion pictures without the consent of the copyright owners is illegal,” the MPAA’s website says. “Movie pirates are thieves, plain and simple…. ALL forms of piracy are illegal and carry serious legal consequences.”

I really think that recording industry has gone way too far with trying to limit the “Fair Use” of copyright material and I hope that this event will start unraveling the trend.

More information here at the LA Times.

Another point to make on this article is that the MPAA believes it is okay for the recording industry to use internet service providers to snoop people’s personal download information and gather “evidence” while a guy is not allowed to drive around in a car and see what their employees are doing in public?

“Intel Inside” a Mac? – Part 3

Well, it is official, after Jobs claimed at least a 2-3 times speed increase, it looks like Macworld says the Intel much closer to maybe 25% increase. And this is mainly for software that was developed for the Intel processor in mind(AKA “Universal” software).

If the software was not developed as “Universal” software for both the PowerPC chip and the Intel chip a tool called “Rosetta” needs to interpret the software for the Intel system. The results do not look good. Of the software tested only one ran on the Intel at near 50% of speed of the G5. The others were even slower.

Also, if you need to run Classic programs, they will not run on the Intel at all.

A good review is here (from a Mac proponent).

Finally, why Intel? Reading assorted articles, IBM, Texas Instruments, and AMD all have better products. Could Apple be looking at selling software only in the near future? Or even selling their computer business in favor of consumer electronics and positioning themselves to make the transaction more “valuble”? I surely hope not. But then again, this might create a push to look even closer at Linux as a desktop OS.

Pregnacies are Fun!

This afternoon, after church we took a rest. All the kids need one and then the parents need to just to keep up with the kids. So anyway, Andrea, our second (4 yrs) took a nap with me and soon after I got up she followed me up stairs and we sat with my beautiful (and seven month pregnant) wife, Joyce.

Andrea was on one side and I on the other and Joyce was talking about the baby moving and we were hoping for “him” (“him” is used even though we do not know what the baby is just that “he” is a baby) to kick. I slowly and carefully moved my hand under Joyce’s loose shirt and placed it on the top of her belly. I then started moving my fingers a little and getting all excited that the baby was moving! Andrea then started getting excited and carefully touched the moving shirt with her finger. That touch was soon followed by her hand. A really big grin spreading over her face.

I was now conserned that she would discover that something was amiss so I had to act very quickly. As her hand landed on my fingers and started to “feel” the moving spot, I tried to grab hand through the shirt while at the same time roaring like a lion.

The shocked look was hysterical (9 hours later Joyce is still laughing). If it were any more intense Andrea would have run screaming. It definitly gave her the fright of her four year old life, that baby tried to grab her!

The recovery took about as long as it took her heart to return to normal excitement range and we all had a good laugh especially us adults with tears and everything. I was not sure Joyce was going to stop. It was much funnier in person but still a great story. Now to see if we can do it to Mark, our seven year old. I’ll let you know.

“Intel Inside” a Mac? – Part 2

Ran into a review of the G5 vs Intel. Looks like it is a close game and choice depends on what you want to do. I’ve got to get a Mac and I do not know what to do though a Mac with and Intel chip will run Windows too (I have also heard that Dell computers will run Mac OS X with a software patch and that could save you $500 for better hardware – but don’t tell anyone). Might be real fun to see if one could set up a tri-boot system on a Mac with OS X, XP, and Linux (Taking bets on which is fastest).

Unfortunately I have only found Apple of Apple affiliated comparisons showing the Mac to have better overall performance than a PC. All other reviews still show the other way around 🙁 One test from a photography group showed that the G5 came out ahead in only 19 out of 77 graphics editing tool tests. We should start seen tests with the new iMac Intel coming in Feb though it will take some time before the Mac software is optimized for the Intel.
